Sestak says Assault Weapons Ban should be Reconsidered

A Congressman from Pennsylvania says the gym shooting in Collier Township earlier this week could’ve been less devastating had the ammunition clips that were used been illegal. Joe Sestak, a Democrat of Upper Darby in Eastern Pennsylvania, is pushing for the reinstatement of the assault weapons ban that was in place from 1994 to 2004. The ban would include ammunition clips police had recovered at the scene.

While Sestak says he strongly believes in the right to bear arms, he also says it is not an absolute right.

“I spent 31 years in the military with weapons at all times.

“But when our law enforcement officers have to handle situations against criminals that have some similarity to what our soldiers had to face in Baghdad, I say that is not correct,” he says.

He also cites the Pittsburgh tragedy in April, where three city officers were killed by a shooter using an AK-47 assault rifle.

If the ban were to be reinstated, Sestak ensures assault gun owners that they are able to keep their firearms as long as they were purchased legally.
