Kennywood Makes Way for New Coaster

Kennywood representatives announced the construction of a new roller coaster to be open in time for next summer. Park Spokesman Jeff Filicko says it will go from zero to 50 miles per hour in less than three seconds, with three inversions.

“A traditional corkscrew, which is kind of like a 360. A barrel roll, which is kind of a wider, more broad based corkscrew, and then a top hat… it’s kind of like a large arch but it takes you upside down and its peak at the top,” he says.

The ride will also be the first to be powered electromagnetically at Kennywood, with linear synchronous motor technology. There is currently no estimate on how much it will cost.

The Turnpike ride is going to make way for the yet-to-be-named coaster, with its last operating day on Sunday. The old-fashioned car ride has been at Kennywood since 1966. However, Filicko says they are planning to bring back the Turnpike at a new location of the park in the future.

The last roller coaster to open at Kennywood was the Phantom’s Revenge in 2001.
